In 2004, the Unreal Tournament community was on the verge of collapse: Unreal Tournament 2004 was released, a follow-up to UT2003. Many clans lost quite a few players in those months, and many clans founded a UT2004 side. For a moment, I was worried.......
Luckily, after a few months it became clear that Epic still had no clue why the original Unreal Tournament was so loved, why th?t community was still going strong, and why 2004 sucked. I myself always had the idea Epic had asked some casual UT-players to advise them how to improve on the original UT.
Noobie: ?OMG that sniper rifle is WAY too good in UT99, I can?t even stand still for 2 seconds or my head gets blown off!! Surely everyone is botting!!?
Epic: ?All righty then, we?ll just take the whole thing out. My 10 year old son was pwning me too with that thing anyway.?
Noobie: ?OMG those guys are using the translocator waaaayyy to quick in UT99, how am I ever suppose to hit them if they translocate like that, I can?t even stand still for 2 seconds to aim or I am getting telefragged!?
Epic: ?All righty then, we?ll just limit the amount of translocs and introduce a reload time. Oh, wait, why don?t we add a little useless camera on the disc, so the player can stand still for some time while he calmly checks what?s around the corner. Yeah, that?s a great idea!?
Noobie: ?What?s with these lame jumps and dodges in UT99, they?re so, like, normal. Can?t we have something that makes absolutely no sense at all? That would be way more cool!?
Epic: ?Sure, we?ll add doubledodges, so that when you?re in the air, you can actually jump again. That?s such a ghey idea, I?ll eat my hat if the game won?t sell millions!?
But what about the main idea of the game? Epic had UT99, a very succesfull game, but of course there were other succesfull games. Epic didn?t like that. Epic wanted world domination.
Epic executive 1: ?Hmmm so we have a pretty succesfull game here, UT99? But Quake?s pretty succesfull too, and so is C&C Renegade. And Battlefield is also doing great business. So I?m figuring.. If we COMBINE all these games into one ?bergame, you know, where you can capture the flag AND ride tanks AND fly crazy machines AND environments look like Charly?s chocolate factory AND we make the game way more ghey so every dumb noob can play against a pro? We?ll make gazillions!!?
